If Pride In Your Victory

You gave it your best but you did not win
But to try and to fail should never be a sin
And though it's not a good feeling to know of defeat
Do keep it in mind that the best can be beat.

The winner can have the big smile on his or her face
But it takes a brave person for to lose with grace
And congratulate the winner and with a smile say well done
You were better than me and you deservedly won.

'Tis easy to be a winner and smile in victory
But it takes a special person to lose with dignity
And not to become the bad sport of the day
By trying to take from the winner in any sort of a way.

The winners are honoured in song, story and rhyme
And their names do live on through the decades of time
But if pride in your victory gives way to self conceit
Then here's to the one dignified in defeat.
