My past I try to put behind me but my past from me won't go away
The old town that I used to live near I think about it every day
My boyhood mentors and those I grew up with in my thoughts as ever remain
And often in my flights of fancy I often visit the old home-place again.
The years have left me looking gray as a badger my hair it was once darkish brown
I followed the lust of the wander it took me to a distant town
To live and to make new friends elsewhere yet the past in my dreams come to me
The things from the memory that are fading the subconscious clearly can see.
Even those long deceased hale and hearty in dreams only time does stand still
And things as they were in my young years in the old town in view of the hill
Yet in reality the changes keep happening and not many now I would know
In the town and townland by the mountain that I left many years ago.
The past I try to put behind me but in my dreams I hear the robin sing
On a birch tree in the gray of the dawning when the fields are in their flowers of the Spring
And in the old town by the mountain as I walk along the main street
I see many familiar faces and me they are happy to meet.
