In the widely read newspaper 'The Melbourne Age'
His cartoons often on the business page
The cartoon king of the old Sherbrooke shire
His story is a story to inspire.
The cartoonist must work hard to build his name
And for Richard Mitchell a hard climb to fame
For a cartoonist lives on every street
And with the best he only now compete.
The old Shire of Sherbrooke readily springs to mind
As home of the artistically inclined
The painters Tom Roberts, Neil Douglas, Arthur Streeton and Fred Williams lived there
And in their time they were beyond compare.
And Vance and Netty Palmer well known writers of their time
And nowadays there's Margaret Pierce and Robyn Klein
As well as the well known artists of today
Neil MaCleod and Joy Serwylo from Upwey.
And add to that Garret Vanderhope the prince of music sound
His fame has spread for miles and miles around
For Sherbrooke's reputation he's done good
And he's even known far north in Hollywood.
Yes Richard Mitchell's in good company
And as a cartoonist few as great as he
People like him don't have a use by date
And have made the Yarra Ranges truly great.
