Since he won and lost the World Heavyweight title to Joe Louis many decades gone by
But Max Schmeling is still living and who would wish to deny
Him of his place in greatness he only fought the best
And he never was found wanting when he was put to the test.
The fights between Louis and Schmeling part of boxing history
The battle of race and of Nationality
The German and the American slugged it out toe to toe
In pre World War 2 days more than six decades ago.
And though the mighty Joe Louis to the reaper long gone
The old champ Max Schmeling is still living on
The great old ring warrior is still living today
He keeps hanging in there he won't fade away.
Max Schmeling is still living he is a true great
With the World's all time great fighters he is one to rate
And though death for us all one day is a certain fate
The reaper for him is obliged for to wait.
Max Schmeling in his nineties is still going strong
To boxing's glorious era he will always belong
He will never be seen as a man of the past
His legend lives on and his legend will last.
It's been more than sixty years since he was in his prime
And he is one who inspired the bards for to rhyme
And of the old champ Max Schmeling 'twould be fair to say
Like the old soldier he won't die he will just fade away.
