Walter De La Mare

He was a marvellous wordsmith with words he did have a way
Wise people say poets are born and not made and I agree with what they do say
His poems are not esoteric though of words he had a great command
That his words bring joy to so many is not hard to understand.

Walter De La Mare was a great poet one of the best of his time
The master of the short lyric he penned such beautiful rhyme
He never did pen a bad poem in death his legend has grown
And of him it surely can be said that he is in a class of his own.

His poems were born out of genius few with him can hope to compare
In his lines I hear the laughter of children and see butterflies dancing in the air
And the full moon in the night sky shining through the window pane
And on the roof over my bedroom the pitter patter of rain.

The poems of Walter De La Mare will live for centuries more
His words bring enjoyment to many far from old England's green shore
Poets are born that is true and poets they cannot be made
And he was a natural poet and a credit to the wordsmith trade.
