In the dark of the morning just before daybreak
The song of the magpie one cannot mistake
The black and white bird with the beautiful song
To Nature's great songsters he surely belong.
The song of the magpie melodious and clear
He sings in the Parkland twelve months of the year
A bird for all Seasons in late Winter and Spring
In the moonlight so uplifting for to hear him sing.
The black and white Aussie magpie is no stranger to fame
The piping shrike for him is another name
Australia's best known songsters of the feathered kind
They sing in all weather sun, frost, rain and wind.
The song of the magpie so pleasant to hear
Even to the flowerless garden his music brings cheer
He sings in all weather even sometimes at night
And so uplifting to hear him sing in the moonlight.
