The Past That Once Was Very Near

The mistle thrush as ever whistles on the poplar tree
But the past that once was very near now seems so far from me
The Spring to Summer quickly fade the Seasons come and go
And the tree has shed her Autumn leaves and the hill wear cap of snow.

If Winter come 'Will Shakespeare' wrote can spring be far behind
His words still relevant today and his words still come to mind
The flowers bloom in the pasture fields and birds sing all the day
But the past that once was very near now seems so far away.

Where is that ancient cypress tree around her children played
And from the rain and wind and sun her branches offered shade
And where are my school and childhood friends I've wondered where are they?
And the past that once was very near now seems so far away.

And time doesn't wait on anyone where have the years all gone?
The boy has grown into a man the clock ticks on and on
And young man in a short span old and hair has turned to gray
And the past that once was very near now seems so far away.

Where is the rose that bloomed so red in latter days of May?
She lost her petals in a week and went into decay
And the sea bird young have left their nest on cliff above the bay
And the past that once was very near now seem so far away.
