He was a former Poet Laureate born with the gift of rhyme
And his books were all best sellers to his work he gave his time
He wrote long poems, he wrote short poems, he wrote verse plays, he wrote song
And from his pen the rhymes came flowing and his verses raced along.
Reynard The Fox and Dauber and The Widow In The bye Street
The Daffodil Fields and Right Royal the horse the best could not beat
Lollingdon Downs and Rosas, King Cole and the Everlasting Mercy
From the pen of the Poet Laureate of the twentieth century.
John Masefield as a young man sailed the Atlantic sea
And for awhile in New York he lived in poverty
And Tom O Connor helped him out he gave him the job start
And Masefield wrote a poem for him a poem right from the heart.
He came back home to England and became a household name
And The Saltwater Ballads his first big break to fame
To be followed by his longer poems he became the Peoples poet
And the common people read his verses and they loved the poems he wrote
