Back Home In Old Wonthaggi

He talks about his three young loves Amanda, Jane and Aggy
When he was young long years ago back home in old Wonthaggi
Till he grew tired of the old town and its familiar faces
And his lust for wander stirred in him his yearning for distant places.

Did they like he seek pastures new and their ties with the past sever
And leave the old coal mining town and South West Gippsland forever
Or did they marry local men and stay near Powlett waters
And in Wonthaggi still reside where they raised their sons and daughters?

He wonders how they look today has time their beauty faded
And have they got wrinkles and gray hair and looking rather jaded
Or do they use dyes and makeups for to hide the wear of the passing seasons?
Though why some women wish to look years younger there has to be many reasons.

He has not been back to Wonthaggi since nineteen fifty seven
When he was young he thought that place was one stop down from heaven
From South West Gippsland he now lives far and to there he won't be returning
And for the town he once called home he has lost all his yearning.

When he was young in his hometown all night long he did party
And he still thinks of his young loves there, are they still hale and hearty?
The reaper one day claims us all and time leaves us looking older
But beauty it will always be in the eye of the beholder.

In South West Gippsland years ago he was a wild young fellow
But time takes care of everyone and the years have left him mellow
Still he talks of his teenage loves Amanda, Jane and Aggy
When he was young long years ago back home in old Wonthaggi.
