Old John

Though he smokes cigarettes and drinks lots of beer and wine
Old John looking well for one of eighty nine
That healthy eating and drinking makes for a long life he does belie
Despite poor diet and his addictions of old age he will die
Alone in his old age but happy in his life
He never fathered children though he did have a wife
She died in her late fifties three decades ago
Of cancer her end it was painful and slow
On Saturday night at the pub when merry he leads in the sing song
And his younger mates around him with him sing along
The great joy of life the old man does embrace
Without him the local would be a dull place
A huge birthday for him is not far away
He will turn ninety on the fifteenth of May.
