The gray dawn is breaking above Koroit Town
And at this time of day few trucks pass up and down
To and from Warrnambool the City by the sea
When the silver billed magpie pipes on the gum tree
To welcome the dawn in his beautiful song
A voice of Australia one should not get wrong
His warbling notes echo down the quiet street
As the shades of darkness to daylight retreat
The black and white Aussie known as magpie lark
Is singing pee wee in the deserted Townpark
And in a nearby paddock the bleating of sheep
Whilst many in Koroit are still sound asleep
Of such peace and beauty a poet a poem would write
For lovers of poetry to read and recite.
