At The Poetry Evening

At the poetry evening the great poet his verses read
Though his great depth of feeling was way above my head
At the end his audience applauded in a long encore
But I was one of just a few who did not ask for more.

His brilliant modern poetry not for the ordinary
The very meaning in the words seemed far too deep for me
Perhaps I am old fashioned one with an ear for rhyme
Not that well educated one of another time.

To their calls of for more he yielded since he did mean to please
The big words rolled from his tongue he read with so much ease
And at the end a huge ovation for the reader of the night
He proudly bowed and exited the stage with a smile of sheer delight.

A poetic living legend his fame does grow and grow
And celebrated as a true poet by those who of poetry know
But the meaning in his poetry I struggle to understand
Not everyone it does seem of language has a good command.
