A Moonless Night

A moonless night the sky is dark
A boobook owl calls in the park
And a fairly cool and freshening breeze
Is rustling in the blackwood trees.

And somewhere near under the darkened sky
I hear the spur winged plovers cry
As above their territory they fly
Perhaps a fox to them nearby.

A moonless night the street is quiet
And not a living soul in sight
And on the rooftop possums fight
They scratch each other claw and bite.

A moonless sky with few stars here and there
And so refreshing the cool night air
Nocturnal creatures hunt for food and prey
They live by night and sleep by day.

A moonless night in a quiet town
And few cars or trucks pass up and down
The empty street with only i
And not another soul nearby.
