Jimmy Doyle

When I was in my late teens and that's going back in time
Jimmy Doyle the hurler was in his glorious prime
For Thurles Sarsfield and Tipperary a hero on the field of play
But now he moves more slowly since he too has had his day.

One of hurling's greatest forwards and humble despite his fame
In the annals of the G A A a legendary name
To watch him hurling in his twenties was a sight to behold
One of the greatest hurlers in Tipperary's blue and gold.

So accurate from the placed balls and in the field of play
And often for Tipperary he was man of the day
A skilful and stylish hurler not rough in any way
Not many greater than him that would seem fair to say.

In the fifties and the sixties when he was at his best
He never was found wanting when he was put to the test
As long as young men chase the sliothar gaelic for the hurling ball
The scoring feats of Jimmy Doyle hurling people will recall.

He was a marvellous hurler and a Tipperary great
And his amazing scoring record does not have a use by date
A credit to Tipperary and to his chosen game
And a very honoured member of the hurling hall of fame.
