One Decent Old Fellow

Last week he was working in his garden and he looked as well as he has ever looked before
But now I hear he is gone forever and I won't be seeing him anymore
Planting seeds and weeding the flower beds his garden was his pride and joy
And to my dear and departed old neighbour I never got to say goodbye.

A few weeks ago on his birthday my kind neighbour Joe said to me
That he never in his life felt so healthy considering his age seventy three
But a week it can make a huge difference and a brain tumor it struck him down
And he will be missed by those who knew him one more good person gone from the town.

He was one who did not have siblings nor did he ever have a wife
And he lived with his mother and father until they departed this life
And in the old house he was born and in the old house was found dead
And he was an honourable person and only good of him is said.

He worked for the local Shire Council till he retired eight years ago
And Betty his eighty year old neighbour is one who will sorely miss Joe,
He cut her grass and tended her garden and she felt there was none greater than he
She has to get by on a pension and his services to her were free.

His pride and joy was his small garden and as he worked he used to sing
And last week he seemed hale and hearty but what a change a week can bring,
He never harmed anybody and he would help you if he could
And he was one decent old fellow and in him there was so much good.
