With their long thin hind legs music they do create
And from late Summer to early Fall they sing for a mate
The mating calls of the crickets one cannot get wrong
To the grasshopper family they do belong
Quite black for to look at of them i recall
They hide in long grass and in cracks in a wall
In their breeding Season the males venture out
To sing mate and leap high and go on hop about
My wonder of them only does seem to grow
Yet little of their ways i can claim to know
Their life span is brief born to sing, mate and die
And they are mere mortals just like you and i
They can jump to a great height though they cannot fly
The dark crickets that sing in the long grass nearby.
