I Never Said

I never said I was a poet as we know true poets are rare
I'm just your average poetaster there are plenty more like me out there
I have written reams of doggerel if there's an afterlife of hell
I will be there with all of the poetasters for the sin of penning doggerel.

I have put in so much effort and energy into penning pages of rhyme
Many even tell me to my face you have wasted so much of your time
In penning rhymes that you cannot sell or that few even wish to read
They do not seem to understand that in me there is a need

Just to keep on writing more rhymes I am addicted it would seem
To penning doggerel after doggerel though such don't give me self esteem
I used to daydream of being a poet of that I do no longer dream
In a World of billions of people poets are few and far between.

I never said I was a poet an addictive rhymer nothing more
Father time is ever ticking and I will soon be the three score
Of years my prime is long behind me the Seasons have left me looking old and gray
But I will keep on penning doggerel until my life's final day.
