Rocky Marciano

As a professional boxer he never knew defeat
In his glory days in the fifties the best he fought and beat
A world heavyweight champion in his prime years and in the boxing hall of fame
And his lives on in the boxing annals as a legendary name.

He died in a plane crash he did not live to grow old
And the story of his marvellous life it often has been told
A gentleman out of the ring and in any way not cold
And it has been said about him that he had a 'heart of gold'

He fought Joe Louis when Joe was ageing a fight he won by
k o
But for his defeated idol only respect he did show
And later when Joe was broke and sick in hospital for the old champ's treatment he did pay
Such generosity and kindness one doesn't hear of every day.

His courage in the boxing ring often put to the test
And in his great days in the fifties he only fought the best
With the likes of Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore he slugged it out toe to toe
When I was a young fellow some fifty years ago.

The mighty Rocky Marciano a boxing all time great
And one the fans of boxing will always celebrate
As a professional boxer he never knew defeat
And in boxing's golden era the best he fought and beat.
