The Last Of The Anzacs

He was quite a hero in his own quiet way
The last of the Anzacs now with the dead lay
And right till his end he could readily recall
How lucky he was just to survive at all.

With the brave young Anzacs in their faded green
He sailed off to Europe when he was sixteen
And he fought like a man though still only a boy
And he returned home to Launceston with one injured eye.

Though the breath of life from the last of the Anzacs has gone
Their legend destined to forever live on
And they did Australia and New Zealand proud
And they held the front line where the gun fire was loud.

Though the last of the Anzacs has died at one hundred and three
Alec Campbell created his own history
He fought in the war as a sixteen year old
And the amazing story of his life will often be told.

The last of the Anzacs survived by his wife
One might say he led an adventurous life
He's fought his last battle and in peace now he lay
But the memories will live they will not fade away.
