Old Joe Sad To Say 'Sept 97'

Glenferrie on the sunday after Grand Final day
The Premiership cup has gone to Adelaide said old Joe sad to say
St Kilda gave it their best shot but they ran out of steam
And Adelaide had their measure they looked the better team.

Last night I drowned my sorrows in the Glenferrie hotel
And we talked about St Kilda football club and I remember well
When St Kilda won the Premiership thirty one years ago
And I was in my early thirties then the years have made me slow.

We take it far too seriously it's just a game after all
And the Grand Final is over enough about football
And the Premiership cup in Adelaide for the next twelve months will stay
But a Victorian team will win it back said old Joe 'sad to say'.

I'm a dependant on welfare since they locked the factory door
And I have never known times to be tough as this before
For government mismanagement there is a price to pay
And I may never work again said old Joe sad to say.

Glenferrie on a sunday on a bright evening in spring
And on sunlit tree by old town hall the asian myna sing
And the Premiership cup in Adelaide their fans shout hip hooray
And things might well be better said old Joe sad to say.
