Elizabeth Shane

The lives of people that she knew in verse she did recall
And what Ledwidge was to County Meath she was to Donegal
She wrote about the coastal lands and the Islands of the sea
And Elizabeth Shane still living in her beautiful poetry.

Her verses pearls of wisdom and easily understood
And what some may see as simple to me seems very good
At her best in the nineteen twenties in Ireland's changing time
When some of the literary critics were trying to bring about the death of rhyme.

But it's thanks to the likes of Elizabeth amongst others that a culture did survive
And that rhyme though out of fashion now still very much alive
For without music, verse and rhyme and song how boring life would be
The song and the music with the song live for an eternity.

Old Ireland it has changed so much since I was a young boy
Still her book of verse of Donegal I really did enjoy
The countryside and people she knew and loved in her verses she did recall
And what Ledwidge was to County Meath she was to Donegal.
