In Time And Distance

In time and distance the past seems far away
But the old fields I love are still near me today
And my friends of the past in my thoughts do remain
And in my flights of fancy I meet them again.

In the leafy wood in the prime of the Spring
The wild born songbirds do whistle and sing
And the lambs on the hillside around their mothers play
And the hawthorns resplendent in their white blooms of the May.

In their hedgerow nest young dunnocks calling for food
And the parent birds busy feeding their young brood
And the air full of buzzings of flies and of bees
And butterflies flit around bushes and trees.

Cattle grazing in lush grass that almost reach to their knees
And wildflowers are nodding in the freshening breeze
And the song of the dipper in the stream I do hear
Though distant to me it does seem very near.

Though from where I live now one could not reach there by car
The old fields I knew from me do not seem far
And the friends I grew up with young in my thoughts remain
And in my flights of fancy I meet them again.
