On Hearing Of The Death Of Bill Keeffe

My school pal Mick phoned with the news I've some sad news he said
Remember Bill our teacher Bill that same Bill Keeffe is dead
And I felt saddened at the news and I wished it were a lie
For I never thought that I'd see the day that I'd hear Bill Keeffe did die.

My thoughts returned to school going days to the old school house and new
When Dick Kiely was head teacher and Bill was number two
When to every Millstreet school going boy Bill like a second dad
Lauded them for work well done and punished them for bad.

He was manager of the school gaelic football team the under age 14
And Bill he had no favourites when it came to pick his team
He only picked the best ball players the best were down to play
We pick the best the team to win is what he used to say.

My thoughts return to Millstreet Town in distance miles away
To school class room near the town park in happy school going day
Where Bill Keeffe our school teacher he taught us country boys
And in retrospect the man was great the man was great and wise.

I heard the news Bill Keeffe has died methought this cannot be
For Bill Keeffe he is living still he lives in memory,
His spirit still in Millstreet school near Millstreet football ground
And whenever Millstreet boys kick ball Bill Keeffe's ghost is around.
