When Matthew Twomey Raced Hot Rod

In the Town Park in Millstreet when Matthew Twomey raced hot rod
Some of the women onlookers gasped aloud 'oh my god'
He will never take the turn but Matthew went around
His back wheels madly spinning kicked earth clods off the ground.

At hot rod meetings in Duhallow when Matthew did compete
He carried the hopes of Mushera and the hopes of Millstreet
He had a traveling fan club and where ever he did race
They loudly cheered their hero on as he battled for first place.

Big Matthew Twomey in his prime was a hard man to scare
He loved the challenge of hot rod the challenge in the dare
And in Duhallow in the sixties hot rod took centre stage
But what was seen as big back then no longer all the rage.

When Billy Coleman and Jer Buckley came along they pushed rallying to the fore
And in Duhallow hot rod racing not big any more
But what was one time all the rage can be reborn one day
And old fad back on centre stage when new fad fade away.

Back when Matthew Twomey raced flat out in days of the hot rod
The women gasped he's going too fast he won't take the turn dear god
But gasps of fear turned to applause in the twinkling of an eye
When Matthew took the bend in style and clods of earth did fly.
