Song Of An Ageing Fellow

I like so many of my years have known a better season
But for lack of hope and zest for life this ought not be a reason
My ego deflated of late and time has made me mellow
But then suppose that's how it is with your average ageing fellow.

As a poet dare I use the word I once had a pretension
But from the status of the doggerelist I could not make the ascension
Yet I cannot say I did not try and I had my dreams of glory
But dreams of course are only dreams and far from the true story.

I'm still naive in many ways I've never been that clever
And I know I'd still have heaps to learn even if I lived forever
And this is not false modesty as I know my limitations
And for any great success in life I don't hold expectations.

I'm just your average sort of bloke an ageing hoary fellow
And time has slowed me down a lot and the years have made me mellow
Yet I am happy with my lot despite my lack of money
And my future doesn't look dull at all the skies of my heart sunny.
