You Sing Your Country's Anthem

You sing your Country's anthem and you wave your country's flag
And of Olympic medals won by your Nation's athletes you like to have your brag
But come tomorrow morning no wealthier you will be
Though you have cheered on strangers to their greatest victory.

They may be your countrymen and women that you cheered on to fame
But to you they are strangers and all strangers are the same
For a stranger is a person you cannot claim to know
And in a stranger's glory wise people do not crow.

When you wave your country's colours what does that signify
Could it be that you are telling us that you are not as good as I
Our Nation's athletes have won many medals and your's have none to show
Is one great because they can run faster though in some ways they are slow?

You sing your Country's anthem and on the flag pole in your front yard you fly
The colurs of your Nation in hope that every passer by
Will look up at the flag and say how wonderful you are
Patriotism is your blindfold but the wise always see far.

In The Wooded Hills Of Sherbrooke

Absence makes the heart grow fonder some have been known to say
And in fancy I can see them they don't seem far away
And I see and hear the galahs in their feathers of pink and gray
In the high paddock by the wooded hill in the bright sunlight of day.

In the wooded hills of Sherbrooke Winter is at an end
In the place where many people live who see Nature as a friend
And the conservationists of Sherbrooke in their wooded hills take pride
You ask them they will tell you 'tis a grand old Countryside.

The whipbird in the wooded gully I fancy I can hear
The whip like cracking of his call it resounds loud and clear
And the varied song of the lyrebird one never could mistake
Even out of the noise of a chainsaw his own tune he can make.

For many years I lived in Sherbrooke and the memories with me remain
Of the distinctive songs of the pied currawongs Nature's forecasters of rain
And in their small corner of the woodland the bell miners pipe all day
And where they live it has been said there is dieback and decay.

In the wooded hills of Sherbrooke I fancy I can hear and see
A small flock of beautiful crimson rosellas piping on a wattle tree
And the sulphur crested cockatoos with yellow crests and feathers white as snow
Lovely to look at but their grating calls coarser than that of a crow.

The laughter of the kookaburra in the wooded hillside ring
They lay their eggs in a tree cavity and raise their young in Spring
And the giant mountain ash trees monarchs of all they survey
Tower over all in Sherbrooke East of Melbourne far away.

I'm In My Late Fifties

I'm in my late fifties my better days gone
And poorer than ever but I will live on
Till the reaper claims me whenever that will be
The one who claims everyone too will claim me.

I'm in my late fifties and long past my prime
And silly old me still addicted to rhyme
No fool like an old fool those words I recall
And my outlook in life has been described as small.

The more one know the less one know they know those words to me apply
And the longer you live the sooner you will die
A far wiser person than me once did say
That the price for some to karma is huge to pay.

One lie leads to another lie one might say how true
But is there one person who can say to you
Whilst once without blinking look you in the eye
And tell you he never once did tell a lie.

I'm in my late fifties and looking quite gray
And 'twould seem clear to all I've known a better day
And though I may not live to be a very old man
I will keep on living for as long as I can.

The Crocodile

The fearsome crocodile he snoozes for awhile
In the sunshine on the brown banks of the great river Nile
A creature of savagery that many fear
And only the biggest to him venture near.

With razor sharp teeth and great power in his jaws
He kow tows to none and lives by his own laws
And even his own kind he has been known to eat
He is not that fussy to him meat is meat.

He is a maneater of him you'd best beware
From murky deep waters stay away from there
He surely will seize you and go on his death roll
And leave it to your friends for to pray for your soul.

On the bank of the river he seems fast asleep
But from him your safe distance you ought to keep
For if he grabs hold of you yourself you cannot defend
Against his ferocity and for you the end.

The Brown Tarwin Waters

Through paddocks and places where scrub and brush grow
The brown Tarwin waters on towards the sea flow
Long before the old river was given it's name
It has flowed night and day long before the first humans came.

To this southern land thousands of years ago
From Asia 'tis said by those who we know what they of do know
The Tarwin was flowing on it's way to the sea
Perhaps since the birth of the first wattle tree.

Through Leongatha's flat countryside and by Inverloch Town
On towards Tarwin Lower it journeys on down
A slow trickle in drought and bank high in rain
Humans come and go but the river remain.

Through green and lush paddocks and scrub lands brown to gray
The brown Tarwin waters they flow night and day
And though people like the Seasons they come and they go
The old Tarwin river forever will flow.

True Greatness

You've climbed the highest mountain and swam in the roughest sea
And with pride you wore the colours of your Nationality
And you are a National hero street signs even have your name
But in ways you seem quite ordinary despite your World wide fame.

And though of your great successes singer songwriters now sing
To others you feel superior and that does not seem a good thing
For true greatness is far different than achieving something great
And you are not truly a great person though many your name celebrate.

You may be a record breaker and a World renowned athlete
But there is a vast difference between pride and self conceit
And you are too conceited the praise to your head has gone
Still on the day you die without you life on Earth it will go on.

You may be a high achiever but that does not speak all of you
For to the higher principles you never could be true
Your ego has outgrown you and success gone to your head
And that there's far more to true greatness than great achievements truer words have not been said.

A Dog's A Man's Best Friend

Your wife she may not speak to you and your marriage at an end
But your dog will always stick by you, A dog's a man's best friend
Her friendship unconditional she will always stick by you
Until the reaper claims her to you she will stay true.

Your male dog he will stick by you and your female dog the same
Even when you're in a rotten mood and you call them out of name
Your dogs will overlook your faults and they don't bear a grudge
They love you for the one you are and you they never judge.

The woman you loved and married when you were in your prime
Do not even speak to you nowadays though she loved you at one time
But your dog is so different your heart she will not break
She will stick by you right till the end and you she won't forsake.

Your dog your faults she can forgive so different to your wife
She loves another better now but your dog loves you for life
The greatest friend you'll ever have be it male dog or female
She will always greet you at the gate with a wag of her tail.
